Privacy Policy
Last updated: 26 July 2026
ToScale is a free browser-based floor-plan and furniture planner run by an independent developer. This page explains in plain language what happens to your floor plan and your data when you use it.
- Your floor plan is opened, scaled and edited entirely in your browser, and your finished layout is saved only on your own device.
- We do keep a downscaled copy of each uploaded plan image so we can see what kinds of plans people use and improve the tool. Location metadata is stripped, and you can ask us to delete it.
- No account, no ads, no cookies, and we never sell your data.
Who is responsible
ToScale (toscale.app) is operated by an individual developer, not a company. For anything in this policy — questions, access requests or deletion requests — write to isaac.lee.dev@gmail.com and you will reach the person who actually runs the site.
Your floor plan
When you upload a floor-plan image, the file is read and decoded by your own browser. Setting the scale, placing furniture and exporting the result all happen locally on your device. The planner does not need a server to work, and the layout you build is never uploaded.
There is one exception, and we want to be explicit about it. When you upload a plan, ToScale also sends a reduced-size copy of that image to us. Before it leaves your browser it is shrunk to at most 2048 pixels on its longest side and re-encoded as WebP, which removes embedded metadata such as EXIF GPS coordinates. The copy is delivered to a private chat that only the developer can read.
- The downscaled image itself
- Its pixel dimensions, plus the file size and file type of your original
- The interface language you were using
- The date and time it was received
Why we do this: to see what real floor plans actually look like — how they are drawn, labelled, scanned and photographed — so that the calibration and furniture tools keep working with them. The copies are not used for advertising, are not linked to your identity, and are not shared with anyone else. We do not attach your IP address or any account or tracking identifier to them.
Please keep in mind that a floor plan can itself contain personal information, such as a unit number, an address or a resident's name. If you would rather not share yours, you can try the built-in sample plan instead, or crop or blank out those details before uploading. If you have already uploaded a plan and want it removed, write to us — describe roughly when you uploaded it and what it shows, and we will delete it.
What is stored on your device
So that you can pick up where you left off, ToScale saves your work inside your own browser. None of it is transmitted to us.
- Local storage, under the key toscale.savedPlan.v1: the furniture you placed, your scale calibration, and whether you prefer centimetres or feet and inches.
- IndexedDB, in the database named toscale: the plan image you are currently working on.
You can remove all of it with the Discard button on the resume banner, or by clearing site data for toscale.app in your browser settings.
Analytics
We measure how the site is used so we know which pages and features are worth improving. Two services are involved.
- Vercel Web Analytics — aggregated, cookieless page-view counts. It does not build a profile of individual visitors.
- PostHog — page views and exits, clicks and interface interactions, product events such as exporting a plan, and alongside them your browser, device type, referring page, interface language and an approximate location at country or region level derived from your IP address.
PostHog keeps its visitor identifier in your browser's local storage rather than in third-party cookies, and it is configured to honour the Do Not Track signal — if your browser sends that signal, PostHog will not track you. Analytics data is never used to identify you personally, and it never includes your floor plan.
Cookies and advertising
ToScale does not use cookies — not for analytics, not for advertising, not at all. The site currently shows no ads and carries no advertising or social-media tracking scripts. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated first, and where the law requires it you will be asked for your consent before any advertising cookie is set.
Hosting and server logs
The site is hosted on Vercel. As with any web host, its servers record standard technical information about each request: your IP address, the page requested, your browser's user-agent string and a timestamp. These logs exist to deliver the site, keep it secure, and rate-limit abuse of the upload endpoint. They are not used to build profiles of visitors.
Who else sees your data
Three providers are involved in running ToScale.
- Vercel Inc. (United States) — hosting, serverless functions and aggregated analytics.
- PostHog Inc. (United States) — product analytics.
- A third-party messaging service — the private channel through which downscaled plan copies reach the developer.
That is the complete list. We do not sell, rent or trade your data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
Where your data is processed
ToScale is operated from South Korea, and the providers above process data in the United States and elsewhere. If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, that means your data may be transferred outside your own country. For those transfers we rely on the standard contractual clauses and equivalent safeguards offered by our providers.
Legal basis
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on legitimate interests under Article 6(1)(f): running and securing the site, understanding how it is used, and improving the tool from real examples. Because a floor plan may contain personal data, we keep the copies minimal, strip location metadata, avoid linking them to you, and delete them on request. You can object to this processing at any time using the address below.
How long we keep things
- Plan copies: kept while they remain useful for improving the tool, and deleted whenever you ask.
- Analytics: retained by our analytics providers under their own standard retention periods.
- Server logs: kept short-term by our host for security and diagnostics.
- Data on your device: stays until you clear it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see what data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, object to or restrict how it is used, and receive a copy of it. Under Korea's Personal Information Protection Act you may also withdraw consent and ask to be told how your information is being handled. Write to isaac.lee.dev@gmail.com and we will respond. Because we deliberately hold almost nothing that identifies you, the request we can act on most concretely is deleting an uploaded plan copy.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In South Korea, you may contact the Personal Information Protection Commission.
Children
ToScale is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 14, or under the minimum age that applies where you live. If you believe a child has uploaded a plan, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that matters — for example if advertising is introduced, or a new provider starts receiving data — the date at the top of this page will be updated and the change described here.
