The squeeze here is width, not length. With the bed covering 42% of the floor, the 40 in at the foot is a real walkway while the side strips are not, so the room only works if you give up on symmetry. If two of you sleep here, whoever is on the inside gets out over the foot of the bed every morning.
Where to put the bed
Headboard on one of the 8 ft walls, then slide the bed hard against a side wall instead of centring it. That swaps two unusable 18 in slots for a single 36 in path you can actually walk, and keeps the 40 in at the foot free as the route to the door. What else fits
An 18 in nightstand does fit the side gap, but it fills that gap exactly, so put it on the wall side and leave the walking side clear. A 55 in x 20 in dresser will not go at the foot: 40 in there is not enough for the dresser plus room to open a drawer and stand back. A wardrobe does not fit anywhere in this room.
